Fresh fish fillets can be dried using a solar dryer — a clean, efficient, hygienic, and energy-saving method. It performs much better than traditional open-air sun drying. So, how do you use a solar dryer to dry fish fillets? Let’s take Shuliy’s mobile solar dryer as an example to explain the process.
Why Choose a Solar Fish Dryer?
Compared with traditional open-air drying, a solar dryer uses controlled heat and airflow to evenly remove moisture from the fish, preventing bacterial growth and greatly extending the shelf life of dried fish. At the same time, it requires almost no grid electricity — the fan runs entirely on solar power, reducing energy costs by more than 90%.

What Are the Advantages of a Solar Drying Machine?
- Hygienic Drying: Fully enclosed structure prevents dust, insects, and contamination.
- Energy Saving & Eco-Friendly: Runs on solar energy, with only a low-power 12V fan consuming electricity.
- Intelligent Temperature Control: Adjustable temperature from 30°C to 60°C, suitable for various types of fish.
- Portable Design: Compact and lightweight, ideal for home use or small-scale factories.

Steps for Drying Fish Fillets with a Solar Dryer
Prepare Raw Materials
Select fresh fish, remove scales and bones, then cut into fillets about 1–3 cm thick. Wash and lightly season with salt to preserve and prevent spoilage.
Load Drying Trays
Spread the fish fillets evenly on the trays without stacking, ensuring sufficient airflow around each piece.
Set Temperature
Use the intelligent thermostat to set the temperature between 45°C –55°C. For fatty fish, set around 40°C to prevent oxidation.
Proceso de secado
The 12V fan, powered by the solar panel, continuously circulates air. Under good sunlight, each batch typically dries in 6–8 hours.
Finish and Storage
When the moisture content drops below 15%, the fish fillets become leathery and free of water. Seal and store them properly to prevent reabsorption of moisture.

Economic and Environmental Advantages of Solar Drying Machines
Using a solar dryer can significantly reduce operating costs. Tests show that drying one batch of fish fillets costs less than $1 in energy, compared with over $30 using traditional electric heaters.
At the same time, the solar drying process produces zero emissions and no pollution, making it ideal for sustainable processing projects in coastal or off-grid areas.
